climbing in Salzburg Land

Climbers' paradise Saalfelden and Leogang

If rock climbing is your passion, Leogang is your playground! The craggy mountains of the Leoganger Steinberge and Steinernes Meer provide climbing routes for all abilities. Explore family-friendly crags or venture out onto a "via ferrata", a special type of climbing route with handholds and footholds anchored into the rock as well as a steel wire for extra safety.

The Salzburger Hof Leogang is located practically at the foot of the Leoganger Steinberge mountains. The Hochzint, Fahnenköpfl and Kaffeeköpfl summits feature a total of 24 routes, ranging from grade 3 to 8 (very easy to very difficult). Everyone from amateur alpinists to competitive climbers are welcome to explore the region around the Passauer Hütte mountain hut.

  • There are two via ferratas on the Leoganger Steinberge mountains: Leogang-Nord, rated B to C (easy to intermediate), and Leogang-Süd, rated D (difficult). They both start at the Passauer Hütte mountain hut, which requires a 2.5-hour ascent.

  • About to embark on your first via ferrata adventure? Visit Weissbach bei Lofer. The Zahme Gams via ferrata (B/C) is perfect for gaining some experience, while the Weiße Gams via ferrata (D) is for intermediate climbers. The Wilde Gams (E/F) is known as one of the most difficult via ferratas in the Alps.

  • If you want to conquer the Persailhorn summit at 2,347 metres above sea level, you can opt for the Wildentalsteig via ferrata (B/C) or take the Südwandsteig via ferrata (B). For experienced climbers only!

  • A 20-minute car ride takes you to Fieberbrunn, where even more via ferrata adventures await. Marokka (C) and Henne (B) are two popular via ferratas that you may want to add to your bucket list.

  • If you plan your first via ferrata climb, St. Ulrich am Pillersee offers one of the best practice via ferratas in the region. The Adolari via ferrata is rated B to C and only 100 metres long. It’s also a great option for families looking to explore the fascination of via ferratas. And if you crave a little more action, you can venture out onto the suspension bridge or try the zip line.
